History & Benefits of Registered Massage Therapy

Massage therapy has been around for centuries, with evidence of it being used in ancient civilizations such as China, India, and Greece. However, the modern practice of registered massage therapy (RMT) is a relatively recent development.

In the early 20th century, massage was often used by physicians as a form of treatment. However, the lack of regulation and standardization in the field led to the rise of unlicensed practitioners and a decline in the reputation of massage therapy as a legitimate medical practice. In the 1940s, the Canadian Massage and Remedial Exercises Association (CMREA) was founded to establish standards for massage therapists and regulate the profession.

In the following decades, massage therapy continued to gain recognition as a legitimate healthcare profession. In the 1990s, the term “registered massage therapist” was adopted in Canada to signify a regulated and licensed practitioner. Today, RMTs are trained professionals who have completed a rigorous education and training program, passed national certification exams, and are registered with their provincial regulatory body.

So, what are the benefits of RMT? Massage therapy has been shown to have a range of physical and mental health benefits, including:

  1. Pain relief: Massage therapy can help relieve pain associated with a range of conditions, such as back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

  2. Improved circulation: Massage therapy can help increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage, which can promote healing and reduce swelling.

  3. Reduced stress and anxiety: Massage therapy can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and releasing tension in the muscles.

  4. Improved range of motion: Massage therapy can help improve flexibility and range of motion, which can be particularly beneficial for athletes and those with mobility issues.

  5. Improved sleep: Massage therapy can help improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing stress and pain.
